I am not sure if this is any help to the Daniel Cook researchers but I will offer it up:
Daniel Cook was in the Prince of Wales American Volunteers, also known as General Browne's corps. Early in the war men were taken from this regiment and put into Emmerick's Chasseurs. On one of the muster rolls for Emmerick's there is a John Cook that was shown as one of General Browne's men.

It is highly possible that this John Cook is a relative of Daniel. If you have info on the possible family of Daniel before the war, you may want to see if the family has a John and Daniel. May be a hint.

Hi All. I have lost track of Cathy Edwards, but feel a need to reply to this posting. The Alexander Grant b. 1756 that she is referring to, is my Alexander Alex Grant who lived to age 95 and died after the Census of 1851. In his WILL he left said Lot 8 Con 4 Indian Lands aka IL to his eldest son Angus Grant b. 1791 d. 1877. Angus' mother was Ann/ Nancy McDonell daughter of Donald McDonell of Scotus b. abt. 1756 d. August 6 1777 at Battle of Oriskany NY during Siege of Fort Stanwix NY. This Donald McDonell was eldest son of Captain KRRNY Spanish John McDonell b. 1728 d. 1810 [buried St Andrews West Ont.] Angus married Isabella Grant of Lot 20 South Branch Road aka SBR, she was daughter of Duncan Grant who received said Lot 20 SBR on McNiff's Map 1786, and Duncan Grant is on OLD UE List. Duncan and his brother John Ban Grant Lot 10 Front Charlottenburg, their sister and mother all seem to have emigrated to America in 1773 on Ship Pearl 1773, and the mother was probably a McDonell, though this requires more research. Duncan's father was Peter Grant KRRNY UE Lot 10 Front on McNiff's Map 1786, and Peter seems to have emigrated in 1774 and settled with my McDonell gang on Kingsborough Patent NY.
The Alexander Alex Grant mentioned above was grandson of Aeneas / Angus Grant b. abt. 1701 d. 1779, who inherited the Wadset of Duldreggan Glenmoriston from his greatgrandfather Duncan Grant when he died 1730 aged 100. Aeneas / Angus Grant had his house burnt and he was almost hung by Cumberland's men in aftermath of Culloden August 1746. Aeneas / Angus Grant left Wadset of Duldreggan to my John Duldreggan Grant b. 1737 d. 1802, when Aeneas died 1779. John Duldreggan Grant had fathered illegitimate son Alexander Alex Grant in 1756 and I think the mother was Caroline Urquhart . John Duldreggan Grant had then married Catherine Grant and had 8 kids with her before she apparently died before 1785 when he emigrated with 8 of his then 9 kids, intending to settle in Glengarry Ont. The ship was diverted to the USA where they overwintered, walking to Glengarry in 1786, where he is found as Mr John Grant holding Lots 25&26 SSSBRR aka Street Road Charlottenburg. Alexander Alex Grant aged 30 in 1786, received 100 acres elsewhere in Glengarry, which he traded to his father John for E 1/2 Lot 26 Street Road, this transaction is noted in The WILL of John Duldreggan Grant dated 1802 [a WILL apparently written out by Rev Bethune of St Andrews Church Williamstown where John was an Elder]. That WILL 1802 may sometimes be found as the WILL of Big John the Robber Grant who was the father of Angus Balagooey Grant Lot 24 SSRR at Martintown, but this is patently false and inaccurate, as these GRANT families were unrelated circa 1802.

Samuel Goodwin, Armed Boatman under Capt. Luce

I am trying to learn more about Samuel Goodwin, who served with the armed boatman under Capt. William Luce.

Goodwin's service began in 1781. He was later granted land in New Brunswick.

Does he appear in the "Loyalist Lineges of Canada"?

I found him on the muster roll via the Public Archives of Canada website, and I am currently trying to name a Goodwin ancestor who came from either New York or New Jersey to St. John, New Brunswick. This is my most likely lead yet.

Any information is greatly appreciated.

This is an open letter to UELAC . I have been disappointed with UELAC for many years , as somehow their little group thinks they are the holder of the keys to all things UEL in Canada , and they are not . When confronted with obvious errors in their research , they stonewall and posture rather then correct their mistakes . They seem to arbitrarily make changes to the Old UE List , though I can see nothing in their Charter which suggests that they have any right to make such changes . They make new additions to their New UE List in favour of their UELAC members , but do not publish such PROOF or even give contact info for these newly minted UE Certificate Holders . Their online website is outdated and does not seem to allow Post-It Notes , to flesh out or refute what little info that is provided . I call on others to share their UELAC experience . Merry Xmas to all .

Thomas,
I just was reading an old post by you regarding the 82nd Regiment. You wrote, ""The first settlers in the Cove were soldiers who had served in the 82nd Regiment. John McNeil (Breac), John McNeil (Brown), Roderick McNeil, Robert Stewart, Malcolm McLean, John French McNeil, Angus MacDonald and Alexander Chisholm. John McNeil (Breac) and John McNeil (Brown) moved there in 1789."
Can you tell me the source of that info? The link above the quote was broken. I am researching an Alexander Chisholm and would like to learn if the Alexander who came to Malignant Cove was my family. I've located my Alexander Chisholm in Rankin, page 111 but he does not mention any link to Alexander and the 82nd. He does say that Alexander's son, Alexander Red, married Mary Brown MacNeil. This would be a link to the Alexander Chisholm and John Brown MacNeil families.
Thanks,
Paul Chisholm

I'm not sure if they were Loyalists or not, but the timing is probably right and Myers' do appear in Esther Clark Wright's book "The Loyalists of New Brunswick."

On p. 308 in the Appendix
Myer(s), Abraham, of R.I., member of 2 New Jersey Volunteers?, settled Gagetown, N.B
- Charles, 1st DeLancey's Brigade, British Legion (Tarleton's) 8
- David, of Mass, settled St. Andrews, d. 1786
- Edward, Loyal American Regiment, British Legion (Tarleton's) 3
- Jacob, Engineering Dept., Lot 659 in Parrtown (Saint John)
- John, New Jersey, Commiasary-General's Dept., RL (not sure what this one is)
- Rachel, settled Queens Co., NB, removed to Kings Co., NB
- Reuben, yeoman, 85, King's American Regt, Lot 142 in Carlton
- Samuel, Lot 1220 in Parrtown (Saint John), removed to Queens Co., NB
- William, yeoman, 85, 1st New Jersey Volunteers?, Lot 1305 in Parrtown (Saint John)

---

I have found the marriage for Jacob Myers and Angelique at Christ Church Montreal. It is listed under 1789 and is as follows:
"1789 ...
Jacob Myers and Angelica Taillon were married by publication the 24th Novr."

and interestingly enough Abraham Myers was a witness to his second marriage to Marie Gauvreaux.

Hi All. I am J. Young from Cornwall Ontario, heart of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry aka SD&G the three eastern most Counties in Ontario, and first settled by Loyalists from the former USA Provinces.
It is quite likely that these Myer/ Mayer/ Meyers and other assorted spellings, were Palatine German Loyalists, who had settled in NY and other colonies of USA, in the 1700s prior to the American Revolution. These folks had fled religious persecution in Germany, and fled to England, which then shipped them off to their American Colonies. They remained Loyal to Britain , and many resettled to Canada after the Rev War ended, in 1783.
I have 3 Loyalist Palatine lines, being Gallinger, Snetsinger and Warner.
I also have 3 Loyalist lines of McDonell / MacDonald. As well as a host of others.
Happy to help, if I can. Cheers J.

Lavall (settlers in Upper Canada after American Revolution)

I am looking for the Lavall (Lavalle, Levelle, etc.) family. According to a son, Baptiste Vincent Lavall, the family lived in Philadelphia, PA, where he was born in 1774. Mother's name unknown. After the American Revolution, the Lavall father resettled the family in Upper Canada, where he engaged in the fur trade. The son, Baptiste Vincent, subsequently did as well.

There was an extensive Lavallee family in Upper Canada in the fur trade through the late 18th to mid 19th century, but I do not know if this Lavall family was related to them.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Cameron. Shot in the dark here, but I would advise you expand [or contract] the spelling of your Surname search. Often it was a Priest or other official who recorded significant info, such as marriages , births and deaths. There was a family of Vallee who once lived at Rigaud Quebec [on the Ottawa River] and one son died at Moose Creek Ontario. Be inventive with your spelling as others before you were as well.
I once found a Snetsinger relative who entered church with her French Canadian fiance named Jean Baptiste Sans Quartier and she walked out with her new husband the Irishman named John Kirkey. Good Luck . J.

Recently I spent a few minutes looking at UELAC list of known UEL . On the M page alone it only took me 5 minutes to locate several of my UE ancestors , but they all were listed under different spellings then many researchers may have looked for . Many of those listed were of Scottish or Irish heritage [same holds true for German and other non first language English speakers] , their names were recorded by persons who did their best and wrote the names phonetically , and many of the first settlers retained that same spelling to ensure they retained their UE status . Later generations have adopted slightly varied spellings . William McGloughlin aka William McLaughlin David McCuin Sr. & Jr. aka David McEwen Sr. & Jr. John McLeland aka John McLennan I can provide a few others: Gollenger aka Gallinger ; Prenties aka Prentice . Hope this helps some of you with brickwalls .

There is a possibility my ggggranffather was a Loyalist in the Upstate New York area. I found his naturalization papers from Johnstown, NY in October 1791. Does anyone know if Loyalists who remained in the Colony had to file for naturalization or did he possibly just enter the US? His name was William Caldwell. TIA

I added source information for Abraham DeForest 1767-1842 to the United Empire Loyalists directory. I also located a land petition for his son Simon DeForest 1904, Toronto. With these source records other people may be able to document their Loyalist linage to apply for a United Empire Loyalist Certificate. You need to have proof documentation all the way to yourself to apply for a certificate and you have to join the United Empire Loyalist Association. Those who can prove they are descendants of Loyalists are legally allowed to use the postnominal initials 'UE' after their name. http://www.uelac.org

Hi Lora, I'm looking for any reference to my gr gr gr gr grandfather, Moses Lutz who was supposed to have been born in Toronto in 1795. I've seen a reference to a Samuel Lutz and Michael Showers and Harmonious House as early settlers of the Settlement of Niagara in 1782. The names Showers and House intersect my family later down the line. I'm trying to find a connection between Moses and Samuel et al. Do you have any mention of them? Thanks so much for your offer.

I was recently shocked to find out that NO ONE ELSE has applied to U.E.L. Association as a descendant of John "Duldraeggan" Grant (who married Mary McIntyre, Catherine Grant and possibly Caroline Grant) when there is so much written about this family! I didn't apply, but a cousin recently did and her application was accepted! This basically "proves" that our shared ancestor, John Grant (c.1798-1869) is a son of John "Duldraeggan" Grant and Mary McIntyre! This was a brickwall of mine for so long! John Grant, son of John "Duldraeggan" Grant, as far as I can see only had one child (Sarah JANE/JEAN Grant, wife of James Alexander Dow), so that could explain why there aren't too many people researching him, but he had many siblings who married into well known and well researched families that I'm surprised that no one else has applied for this! If I'm wrong though, feel free to contact me. This cousin was informed by the UEL Association that she has been the only one who has applied though.... rothycat@hotmail.com Maggie Barron
