Trying to match his young son James age 6 upon arrival to being the same James who married Winnie Thomas in 1784 Craven County. Any help appreciated.

Hi Ulla . I am surprised that no one has answered your query directly . Your Finlay Grant is to be found on the Kingsborough Patent Rent Roll with Rent Due Date 25 Sept 1778 , which puts him in a grouping with my ancestors William Carr and his son in law David McEwan . Their Ship was the Snow class Brittanie which left Scotland 1773 [probably with Finlay aboard] and put in at Dublin where my guys boarded . I agree that he is not likely directly related to the other Grant mentioned in this thread . Finlay Grant is found on the KRRNY muster roll , born 1736 , no wife's name given , but one son and daughter . That son would be John Grant , daughter unknown , and probably Lewis Grant is a son of Donald Grant Sr .
Finlay Grant drew the west half Lot 19 Front Charlottenburg which he exchanged for the east half of Lot 17 South Branch Road to be next his son John Grant who held west half of that Lot 17 . The trade was with the Heirs of Kenneth McKenzie , but since the trade took place while Patrick McNiff was making his 1786 Map , your Finley Grant appears nowhere on that McNiff's Map 1786 but a McKenzie name appears on both these Lots . This John Grant later had to go to court in 1800s to prove his ownership east half Lot 17 , which is still in the family today , and known as the Thornapple Tree .

Hi Marion Lees . J. YOUNG from Cornwall Ontario here , heart of Loyalist Country of SD&G . I am interested in your Black Peter Grant of Craskie . His story with the Bonnie Prince seems better known than his ancestry . I have various lines for this Black Peter Grant , but would prefer to discuss them offline by email . Janet Duldreggan Grant married a different Peter Grant and it is said that her son Alexander Grant was the Prisoner at Philadelphia during Rev War visited by his Uncle Patrick / Peter Grant ; this Janet Duldreggan Grant being a sister of Isabella Duldreggan Grant [wife of Simon Fraser Sr. and mother of Jr. the Explorer] , sister of John Duldreggan Grant Lots 25 & 26 Street Road , sister also to Peter Duldreggan Grant b. abt. 1745 .

This is extremely interesting! Sorry it has taken me a brief 4 years to answer - I've been away from research for awhile. Thank you so much for posting this....

Hi Elaine . J. Young from Cornwall Ont. here . You recently tried to contact me via Ancestry.com , and they forwarded your message to me , but unless I join Ancestry.com they will not let me respond to you directly . I am a member of Rootsweb and can thus Post on these Boards . A year and a half ago I suggested to you that your answers might have already been Posted to the Glengarry Board , and suggested you read those Postings and then make a new Posting to the Glengarry Board including all your current research in an orderly fashion . This Loyalist Board seems mainly frequented by persons looking to gain their UE status and they are of little help to others doing research . The Glengarry Board is frequented by lots of knowledgeable and helpful researchers . Good luck . J.

It is a bit late to answer 10 years later but I hope you were as successful as I was to find the general area in which your ancestor lived because or the Rent Roll and the maps of the Kingsborough Patent which exist. Mine was William Kennedy and I know where he lived because of the lot information for Michael Carman who declares in his Memorial in 1782 that Kennedy was one of his neigbourg. Although there was no information on the lot of my ancestor there were for the lot of William Carman so I got to figure the general area. John Le Garignon, Canada

If you have ancestors who served in the KRRNY and perhaps in the St Leger campaign to the Mohawk Valley NY 1777 , then you might want to Google the following web site which has transcribed chronological historical correspondence between major figures on both sides of this conflict as it unfolded in 1777 , Google : Documents Relating to the Battle of Oriskany and the Siege of Fort Stanwix 3rd Edition Joseph Robertaccio 1/15/2013
Our thanks to Joseph Robertaccio for all the work that went into this site . It allows those of us who are interested in these events , to view the different perspectives of these events as they unfolded and were later written down in some personal diaries or as official reports to superiors . There may be some slight transcription issues as is usual when transcribing hand written pages of this era . I personally like reading it in this format rather then in boiled down expert opinion of these matters . I do hope Joseph will welcome this little review of his site , which is well worth the visit .

As to the first ? re" Donald Grant Jr. and Sr. in the KRRNY JJ

Elaine Sutton has done some exceptional knot deconstruction.

Donald Grant Sr. b1744 f/o Donald Grant Jr. 1777 (too young to be in the KNRRY)

Donald Grant Jr. 1740 (not related to senior, but also in KNRRY)

they all moved to charlottenburg and had children that all made land claims.

The book entitled "The History and Master Roll of The King’s Royal Regiment of New York" clearly lists the two names and DOBs. but not DG Jr 1744.

I created a synopsis of the problem, comparing the many citations for DG 1740 and 1744 and other citations that indicate the name confusion when they get to charlottenburg, it seems like jr becomes sr and sr becomes jr. based on military service in specific KRRNY companies.

the word document is stored on "Kevin Frye Family Tree" under Donald (Craskie Weaver) Grant 1744, in his Gallery and named "Which DG ? Start Here"

Hi Bill,
I've gotten to my several times Great Grandfather, and this is Lewis/Ludwig.
I have "The World Account" on here, and I believe I found an image with his signature on a "paycheck" from when he was with the Loyalist (Signed Ludwig Edinger). I just need to find it again. When I do, I will gladly contribute.
I've also read, somewhere, that he first chose the Patriot's Side; but I cannot factually confirm that at this time.
Fortunately, I have to go to PA, USA, for another reason; but I will be hitting all places that are possible in search of ANY original documents on Lewis.
I can't even find him on any immigration coming from Germany prior to the Rev- War. Did he land in Canada, and maybe hitched a ride down to this war? Was he just some innocent German farmer who got caught up in this and had to make a choice?
There are too many mysteries about him.
There are Edinger's on those lists; but, not Lewis or Ludwig.
Please keep in touch!

Warmest Wishes,

Jerri Roberts

Hi Jerri, This is some of the stuff I have managed to compile onto Geni for Lewis Ettinger. By all means email me directly at piperwilly at hotmail dot com and I have some other info I can send. I received my Loyalist certificate for Lewis last year so I have stockpiled quite a bit of info but always on the lookout!
So nice to meet you and I look forward to hearing from you :)

Kindest regards,
Bill

Here goes lol!....

Family history has it that Lewis was born in 1751-1753 in Germany and as of yet I can't find any proof but it seems that Abraham Eddinger that came to Lehigh county Pennslyvania aboard the Pheonix in 1754 is the most likely candidate as his father. There were other Ettingers that came in 1730s and 1760s so the 1730s Eddingers are probably not the correct ones (Unless Lewis was actually born in PA?). Hoping to find some proof eventually.

After reviewing the research done by Isabelle Hennigar who had traced the Hennigar family back to the Alsace-Lorraine region of Europe (Christian Hennigar was a cousin of Lewis') I realized that Lewis had fought during the American Revolution initially with the Continental army and then the British. He joined the Pennsylvania militia under Captain Hagenbuch. After their unit was ambushed at the Battle of Long Island he joined the 84th Highland Regiment. Most likely to avoid being a prisoner of war. At the end of the war the regiment was disbanded at Fort Edward at Windsor NS and Lewis obtained several land grants. Because of Land practices of the time his initial grant was escheated to the crown and he eventually receieved a grant in Kennetcook and lived near Singer and Hennigar cousins.

While doing research for my certificate as a Loyalist descendant of Lewis I was provided with more source material by Carol Harding , genealogist of the Nova Scotia branch of the UELAC. One of which was the Douglas township book.

After further analysis of the land grants of the children of these two Donald's by elaine sutton, it does appear that DG Sr craskie weaver 1744 was the land owner (with son Lewis Grey Grant not to be confused with the other Lewis Grant) of 13-2 SBRR Charlottenburgh with the other DG 1740 a few lots down.

DG Sr was also the father of DG 1777 "the younger", "Og" and also Junior also of 13-2 SBRR as documented in LPs.

Adjutant General Certificates filed in the Surveyor General's Office

On the LAC website's land petitions, there is one that raises some interesting questions about possible additional sources of records of Loyalists that I have not seen mentioned elsewhere.

Microfilm C-2824, Bundle 3 (actually S3), Petition 165 is a unique petition of an assignee of a Loyalist -- not a Loyalist nor a Loyalist's family member. But the assignment was not direct. The assignment was actually made to someone who then sold it to the petitioner. So this petition is unusual in multiple ways.

But the actual petition in 1846 identifies two sources. Here is the relevant text: "That he is the assignee of James Lake who is entitled ... for his service in the Addington Dragoons during the last war under the Adjutant General's Certificate filed in the Surveyor General's Office No 3679 ..."

Clearly the "last war" in 1846 did not mean the American Revolution, so that James Lake (of Ernestown) was not claiming to be a Loyalist, but I wonder if there might be records of Loyalists in the Surveyor General's Office.

Does anyone know about such records?

Seeking Vitals Info such as Date and Place of Birth, Names of Parents, etc. of a New Hampshire Loyalist named Thomas Crane, possibly born in England, who abandoned his NH family and fled to Nova Scotia during the Revolutionary War. He petitioned Parliment and received a Land Grant in the Town of Digby, County of Anappolis, NS for his Loyalist service with the British Army during hostilities. He died in Digby in 1790. Any info sincerely appreciated. Thank you. Hal Crane

I am related to Joel Cook thru his daughter Susan Ethelzelda Cook. My research has also been clouded by the common last name and so many repeats of the first names. I am constantly confused by the interchange of Daniel Cook and Lydia Churchill and Daniel Cook and a wife with last name of Fuller.
One of those couples were LDS and traveled to Utah where they died. There has also been speculation as to one Cook couple being parents to the other Daniel Cook.

Susanna Wilson, wife of Asher Wilson of Yonge twp wrote a petition in 1817, where she stated she was a daughter of Casper Stotts of Elizabethtown.
She is indexed in the land petitions under Statts/Willson.
UCLP are online at LAC.

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/00...

There is also an Elizabeth Statts/Shank of Elizabethtown who wrote a petition in 1818. Possibly a daughter of either as well.
And also an Eleonor Stratta Griswold, who wrote a petition in 1817 from Yonge Township.

Good luck

French revolution loyalists - general advice?

Hi, my ancestors were possibly loyalists to the French royalty in 1790-1830 and may have changed their legal names to avoid execution. Does anyone have any general advice in investigating this background of people in East- or North-east France especially? You are welcome to look at my profile for names, surnames and in-laws we believe to be connected to this family. Thank you I may not see messages here so anyone can email if they can. -Robert -- Youarewatchingthis1000 (atsign) gmail (dot) com

Who were the 6 Hostage / Prisoner's taken by Patriots from Johnstown NY Jan 1776 . I think I know.

Hi . My name is J. Young from Cornwall Ontario , and I am an amateur genealogist , who has researched my family tree for over 50 years and extensively for the past decade .
Today , I want to share a bit of my research on some of the individuals , who were all of the McDonell Clan who arrived from Scotland to New York Province on the Pearl 1773.
I have found that such noted authors as William L. Stone Jr. and W.L. Scott , as well as such online sources as the Dictionary of Canadian Biography aka DCB and WikiTree Profiles , are flawed in their info regarding the 6 individuals that I will be discussing here , being the 6 McDonell gentlemen taken as Hostage / Prisoners by the American Patriots from Sir John Johnson's in January 1776 .
My list of these 6 Hostage / Prisoners Jan. 1776 , is as follows :

Captain Archibald McDonell of Leek [ son of old John McDonell of Leek , who was in his seventies in 1776 , and too old to be a hostage / prisoner so two of his sons being this Archibald McDonell of Leek and Ranald McDonell of Leek went instead of this old John McDonell of Leek ] [this old John McDonell of Leek was elder brother of both Allen McDonell of Collachie and Alexander McDonell of Aberchalder , all 3 of whom given credit for organizing the Pearl 1773 ] .

Captain Alexander McDonell of Aberchalder [ who was one of Six Hostage / Prisoners along with his eldest son John McDonell of Aberchalder ] [ this Alexander and John McDonell of Aberchalder escaped from the Patriots and made it to Montreal in Spring 1777 , having brought the old John McDonell of Leek with them].
In his Orderly Book dated June 18 1777 Sir John Johnson promotes Alexander McDonell of Aberchalder to Captain in KRRNY , and June 19 1777 promotes his son John McDonell of Aberchalder to Captain - Lieutenant ; both these men retained this rank throughout the Rev War and resettled together to Lot 25 Front Charlottenburg Glengarry [ this John's younger brother Hugh McDonell of Aberchalder settled with them Lot 25 Front , but this Hugh was NOT one of Six Hostage / Prisoners as claimed by W. L. Scott and then parroted by both the DCB and Wikitree Profile for this Hugh ] .

Captain - Lieutenant John McDonell [ eldest son of Captain Alexander McDonell of Aberchalder ] this John promoted to Captain - Lieutenant on June 19 1777 . In his book written circa 1882 , William . L. Stone Jr. uses the Orderly Book of Sir John Johnson as his guiding format , and following this June 19 1777 entry of the promotion of John McDonell to Captain - Lieutenant , this William L. Stone Jr. adds his own insights claiming this young Captain - Lieutenant John McDonell was killed in hand to hand combat with a Mr Gardiner on August 6 1777 at Battle of Oriskany during Siege of Fort Stanwix NY . WRONG . This Captain - Lieutenant John McDonell of Aberchalder survived the Rev War , and had an extended military and political career in Upper Canada .

Allen McDonell of Collachie [ brother of old John McDonell of Leek and Captain Alexander McDonell of Aberchalder ] , this Allen McDonell of Collachie was designated Sr. on various lists of the Six Hostage / Prisoners though NO son of his was taken in this group . In his Claim for Losses this Allen McDonell of Collachie Sr says he was one of six Scots gentlemen taken Hostage / Prisoner Jan 1776 along with his brother [ Alexander McDonell of Aberchalder ] and 4 nephews [ no son mentioned] .

Allen McDonell of Lundy !? In his Petition dated Cornwall July 6 1807 , this Allen McDonell [ designation as Lundy appears to have been scribbled in after the fact ] , says he was one of the Six Hostage / Prisoners taken Jan. 1776 and held 3 years before his escape . His Petition is supported by a letter from Sir John Johnson . This would be the Allen McDonell Jr.

Ensign Ranald McDonell of Leek [ brother of Captain Archibald McDonell of Leek ] . In his Claim for Losses dated Montreal 16 1787 , this Ensign Ranald McDonell of Leek , says he was one of Six Hostage / Prisoners taken Jan 1776 , and that 4 of the other 5 taken with him , had received Commissions being , 2 Captains , 1 Captain - Lieutenant , 1 Lieutenant . The 2 Captains would be this Ranald's brother Captain Archibald McDonell of Leek and uncle Captain Alexander McDonell of Aberchalder who's son was the Captain - Lieutenant John McDonell of Aberchalder , and most likely the Allen McDonell of Collachie [ Sr.] as the Lieutenant .

It has been extremely frustrating to have continually found these noted sources to be in error , not really sources at all ; and their flawed work parroted over and over again by others , who refuse to change their mind when the facts change .

We all , can and do make errors , but correcting these errors should be a priority .
Cheers J.
